What Is Primitive Style/Design?

Primitive design is a style of home decoration inspired by the simple, handmade, practical furnishings of early American life, particularly the 1700s and 1800s.

It's a style that celebrates simplicity, age, craftsmanship, and imperfection. Instead of making everything look new, polished, and expensive, primitive decorating makes a home feel old-fashioned, warm, comfortable, and lived-in.

Why is it called "primitive"?

The word primitive in this context doesn't mean crude, ugly, or poorly made.

It refers to an earlier, simpler way of living, when people often made their own furniture, household items, and decorations using materials they had available.
