The Photograph That’s Hiding in Plain Sight

You’ve captured the perspective and the moment you hoped to find - on a trip, during a walk around town, at an event, or perhaps right at home when the light was beautiful. But later, as you look through your photographs, you discover that your best image still isn’t quite the photograph you saw in your mind’s eye.

What happens next?

On August 24, from 6:00-8:00 p.m., we’re going to take an adventure together that may feel a little like a game of hide-and-seek. Sometimes the photograph we saw in our mind is much closer than we think - perhaps only a few simple steps away in Photoshop.

Think of Photoshop as a critical ingredient in a favorite recipe. For me, a slice of delicious apple pie is pretty high on the list. But we all know that the ingredients - and what we do with them along the way - make the difference. Photography is much the same. The final photograph we imagined as we stood looking at a scene may not be exactly what our camera captured. But the image we envisioned may still be there, hiding within the photograph. It’s what we do before, during, and after the moment we press the shutter that helps us find it. A photograph may be oh-so-close to what we had in mind. Sometimes, a few thoughtful adjustments can make a remarkable difference.

Photoshop is just one of many post-production tools that can help us make those adjustments. During our two-hour adventure, we’ll look at photographs that were close - or sometimes not close at all - to the desired result and discover how they can be completed in surprisingly simple ways.

No tricks. No Photoshop wizardry. Just practical tools and techniques that can help you create the photograph you saw in your mind.

About our instructors, Jim and Carol Veneman:

For over twenty years Jim has served as a university professor of photojournalism. He has covered many national and international stories. In 2011 he received the National Press Photographers Association’s highest award for teaching photojournalism, the Robin F. Garland Educator Award. For more than 10 years Jim and Carol have taught photography at the Dixie Carter Performing Arts Center and in an after-school program at the Huntingdon Middle School, introducing students of all ages to the idea of seeing beyond the backyard fence.
